asl academy benefits.

what is asla?

The ASL Academy is a charter school - which simply means that it is a tuition-free public school which operates as its own school district. It is subject to the same teacher certification laws and educational standards as other public schools in New Mexico. Students attending the ASL Academy do not need to meet any admission or eligibility requirements (such as having a hearing loss or living within a specified geographical boundary).  The ASL Academy is authorized by the State of New Mexico's Public Education Commission (PEC) and is not affiliated with APS or NMSD.

who is asla?

The ASL Academy was created by hearing parents of deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children who wanted a quality educational option which allowed their families to remain together. These parents were unwilling to accept a lower standard of education for their children or to send them to an institutional program away from their siblings, friends and families.

The ASL Academy was created by deaf education teachers who wanted a school environment which understood the unique needs of deaf and hard of hearing children and which held high academic standards for these children.

Because of the determination of these parents and educators a new 21st Century educational model inclusive and supportive of families has been created. The ASL Academy has been proactive in creating this environment and has developed partnerships with UNM's Dept. of Education to ensure qualified teachers and staff will continue this important work into the future.

The ASL Academy is comprised of 100 students in grades K-10.  Approximately 60% of students qualify for special education services and approximately 85% of students have a link to the deaf community, either by being deaf or hard of hearing themselves or by having a dhh sibling, parent, cousin or other family member.

The ASL Academy welcomes questions and encourages parents to educate themselves so they can make the right decision for their child and family. Contact us to schedule a meeting or to tour the school.

program.

A rigorous standards-based bilingual educational program which promotes high academic expectations is the foundation of the school. The curriculum supports language acquisition of both ASL and English for all students.  The ASL Academy believes a learning environment carefully tailored to support each student’s unique needs will give them the opportunity to flourish and reach their full potential – not only academically, but also socially and emotionally.

The New Mexico Coalition for Charter Schools named the  ASL Academy Charter School of the Year for the 2013/2014 school year!  The ASL Academy exemplifies the importance of charter schools as an educational option for children with limited choices of specialized programming.
