individualized.

Because there is no "typical student," the ASL Academy's program is dynamic and individualized. The curriculum and instructional methods are constantly evolving and adjusting to meet the needs of each student - whether that student is profoundly deaf and utilizes ASL and written English, whether that student is hard of hearing and utilizes both ASL and spoken language, whether that student is hearing but has speech delay or another disorder which requires them to use ASL to communicate, whether that student is deaf and their family is Spanish speaking...

The school's curriculum is appropriate for all students, including students who are hearing or hard of hearing, and meets the state's educational standards (for example, hearing/hard of hearing students will learn to read aloud and will work on listening comprehension skills).

Students who are working on their spoken language skills have access to peer language models and have the opportunity to use both spoken language and sign language in their daily interactions with adults and children. Additionally, speech therapy services are provided as indicated in student IEPs and these services are integrated with the classroom curriculum.

The acquisition of American Sign Language by hearing students provides deaf and hard of hearing children with the opportunity to interact and communicate with a larger group of peers and promotes an environment of inclusion and school-wide access to language.

Importantly, the ASL Academy offers a "real world" environment where deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children, parents, staff, and community members must communicate and work together to reach their goals.

learn the facts.

Because the ASL Academy offers such an innovative and unique environment, parents are invited to tour the school to see our teachers and students in action.

We encourage parents to schedule a meeting with school administrators and to talk with other ASL Academy families in order to dispel inaccurate information and rumors about our program.

We look forward to speaking with you soon to share our educational philosophy and to provide more information on why the ASL Academy is the current leader in deaf educational reform in New Mexico and across the nation.
